Short Bio

Dr Michael J Rees FBCS, CEng, CITP
Adjunct Professor of Computer Science
Faculty of Business, Bond University

As Associate Professor in Computer Science in the School of IT at Bond University Dr Michael Rees gained many years of research expertise in interactive web technology from its inception in 1998. Known today as the Cloud this technology forms the basis of most apps and social media tools in use today on smartphones, tablets, laptops and desktops. A pioneer of cloud technology Dr Rees now specialises in its wide adoption for personal use and community groups.
In 1995 together with his PhD student Michael is attributed with the invention of the word 'weblog' now usually shortened to 'blog'. At the time both were creating online web sites to record a journal or log of activities in online meetings with later analysis and processing into meeting minutes and other documents. These web sites were the precursor of the blogs we know today. For more details see:
Michael is a great believer in linking the crowd with the cloud. The community at large expect to communicate with enterprises big and small. Cloud apps make this possible. The key factors here are the people in the various communities of interest, how easily and conveniently they can interact, and the quality of information generated. The choice of tools can be important in terms of scaling out to very large groups, reliability of access, privacy of information and the overall installation and maintenance costs. As a cloud architect Michael advises on the combination of processes and tools that can be tailored to meet the needs of individuals and community organisations.
For himself as a professional Michael has been using and gaining experience of social media tools such as blogs, wikis, social information sharing, and micro-blogging over several years. With a colleague in 2007 Michael undertook a survey of social media tools across Bond University for teaching, research and administration. Michael was the founding chair of Social Media Club, Gold Coast, the second to be formed in Australia, with the goal of spreading an appreciation of the benefits of social media tools in business, education and government. The club motto is 'if you get it, share it'. Michael was chair from January 2009 until December 2010. He continued as a committee member until August 2011.

Michael retired from a full-time position at Bond University in December 2011. Currently he holds the honorary position of Adjunct Professor in the School of Business. Since then Michael has developed his first MOOC entitled The Cloud and You with an associated Kindle book. Details of these are to be found on the home page.
