subject:  A Farewell

Dear Michael Rees,

This is a final thank you to all forty thousand of you who took "Introduction to Sociology" before your computers in 113 different countries.

Now it is necessary to end the course and take down the web site. Although I would have liked to keep it running, my volunteer course assistants and I must get back to other responsibilities.

For those of you who are interested in continuing the discussion, we will be back in February. Between now and then, let your friends with interests in sociology know that they, too, are welcome to sign up.

However you participated in the class -- by watching videos, doing the reading, making informed on-line posts, or taking exams -- I appreciate your contributions to this community.

I will remember you all: my first on-line class.

I am attaching a link to a commencement address that was given by my former colleague and friend, Professor Dick Flacks of the University of California, Santa Barbara. I feel Dick’s words are a wonderful way to end our class, and I will come back to them again in February when I re-consider C. Wright Mill's "The Promise" in my opening lecture.

Until then, my very best wishes to you.

Yours sincerely,

Mitchell Duneier
